ERI:    Basic Science Resources

Anatomia Universa On the Internet

The Information Commons Production Services, based in the University of Iowa's Hardin

Library for Health Sciences, has made online viewing of rare anatomical illustrations more

interactive with the Web release of part two of "Anatomia Universa," a book by noted

anatomist Paolo Mascagni. Published as a series between 1823 and 1832, the physical

"Anatomia  Universa" is a comprehensive work of anatomy lacking only microscopic

anatomy, histology and the lymphatics of the skin. The beautifully executed plates depict

the anatomical and skeletal structure of the human body in great detail.

Anatomy Interactive

The long term goal of this project is a vast and comprehensive distribution system for anatomy-related

information. This site serves as a  medical education resource center for the dissemination of clinical

and basic science materials.  Designed for medical students, the site contains many links to

resources dealing with Human Anatomy on the WWW.   URL:http://www.vet.purdue.edu/bms/ai

Animated Biological Chemistry

This site is a collection of video clips  recorded during lectures presented to first year

medical  students in Human Biochemistry at the University of  Nevada School of Medicine.

The complete program is a  self-contained course designed for medical students taking

biochemistry yet it is especially suited for students applying to or recently admitted to

medical school wanting  to prepare for their medical school biochemistry course.

Association of Medical School Microbiology and Immunology Chairs

AMSMIC promotes the educational and scientific purposes of the field of microbiology and

immunology, and to provide a forum for communication among chairpersons of

Departments of Microbiology and Immunology or equivalent organizational units responsible

for teaching medical students. The site contains information about the organization as well

as powerpoint slide of past presentations.   URL:http://www.amsmic.org/index.htm

Biochemistry Tutorials

These computer tutorials allow medical students and other health science students to

assess their knowledge of biochemistry and related disciplines and to test their ability to

use this knowledge in simplified clinical settings.

BioMed Central

BioMed Central is an independent publishing house committed to providing immediate free

access to peer-reviewed biomedical research This commitment is based on the view that

open access to research is central to rapid and efficient progress in science and that

subscription-based access to research is hindering rather than helping scientific communication.

Bones of the Skull

This software received the 1999 Sandoz/Slice of Life Student Software Development

Award. The Bones of the Skull: A 3-D Learning Tool, was produced at the University of Iowa's Hardin

Library for the Health Sciences and the Information Commons. It is available free for download.

Ed's Basic Histology Gallery

This site was developed primarily for the medical students at The University of Health

Sciences in Kansas City. It introduces basic concepts of histology actively, without having

to schedule classroom time.   URL:http://www.pathguy.com/histo/000.htm

Histology Tutorial

This site was designed for first year medical students.  It provides a wide array of

histological images in both quiz mode and review mode.

Human Embryo

Developed for the Public Broadcasting Service program Nova, this site has a time

lapse sequence of the human embryo available in different formats

(e.g., QuickTime, AVI, etc,).

Integrated Medical Curriculum

IMC is the first integrated medical curriculum that links together the study of anatomy,

physiology, histology, pharmacology, immunology and medical ethics via the Internet. The

IMC features Gold Standard Multimedia's (GSM) highly regarded collection  of medical

education titles online, with the added benefit of internal integration offering links to related

concepts between titles.   URL:http://www.imc.gsm.com/

International Association of Medical Science Educators

The mission of IAMSE is to promote medical education through faculty

development, and to ensure that the teaching and learning of medicine in

the 21st Century continues to be firmly grounded in science. The site contains information

about conferences, publications (including the journal Basic Science Educator), projects

and educational resources.   URL:http://www.iamse.org/

Introduction to Cardiothoracic Imaging

Introduction to Cardiothoracic Imaging is a rich site for student education.  The site is

searchable and contains anatomic imaging studies as well as educational information

about imaging technology. The images are indexed by anatomy, technique or case, and

many include text and/or audio interpretative notes, as well as motion images and

comparative "normal" images.   URL:http://info.med.yale.edu/intmed/cardio/imaging/

LUMEN: Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine

LUMEN is designed to network medical education on the WWW. The site has sections for

undergraduate, graduate and continuing medical education. The user can retrieve content

through search engines for the curriculum, multimedia, and lesson databases.

Alternatively, content can be accessed either through links to specific courses and

clerkships or through a directory of computer-aided instructional modules.

Multidimensional Embryo

This project is a collaboration funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human

Development (NICHD) to produce and make available over the internet a three-dimensional

image reference of the Human Embryo based on magnetic resonance imaging. The collection

of images is intended to serve students, researchers, clinicians, and the general public

interested in studying and teaching human development.
